A report released Tuesday by In the Public Interest, the Public Accountability Initiative, and the Center for Popular Democracy detailed how Wall Street continues to finance private prisons that violate human rights.
New data reveals how Wall Street banks provided more than $2.6 billion in financing to the private prison industry. UNews spoke to Ana María Archila, co-executive director of the Center for Popular Democracy, one of the three organizations responsible for the report.
Between 2013 and 2015, the DOL helped workers collect an average of $27 million annually in mandated pay, such as the full minimum hourly wage, overtime compensation and tips, according to a report authored by the workers' rights groups, Make the Road New York and the Center for Popular Democracy
The groups also took out a full-page advertisement in The New York Times reading, "Attention corporate America: don't let hate into your boardroom." The effort is being organized by Restore Public Trust, together with some 40 groups that have signed on.
