Popular Democracy Issues Statement on Supreme Court Decision Allowing Trump Mail-In Voting Restrictions to Move Forward

WASHINGTON D.C. — Following the Supreme Court’s decision allowing the Trump administration to move forward with new restrictions affecting mail-in voting, Popular Democracy warned that the decision is part of a broader effort to erect new barriers to voting ahead of the midterms and vowed to fight back through voter protection, public education, organizing and turnout. Popular Democracy and its affiliates are urging voters to stay prepared now by checking their registration, knowing their state’s voting deadlines, making a plan to vote and returning mail ballots early whenever possible.

Popular Democracy released the following statement:

Yesterday, the Supreme Court gave the Trump administration the green light to move forward with yet another attempt to interfere with how Americans vote.

President Trump has spent years attacking mail-in voting, despite it being his own voting method of choice. He knows that making it harder to vote makes it easier for those already in power to stay in power. Now, with the midterm elections approaching, the Trump administration is pushing changes that could throw election systems into chaos and put new barriers between eligible voters and their ballots.

The right to vote should not depend on whether your name makes it onto a new federal list. Voters pick our leaders. Our leaders do not get to pick their voters.

The fight over mail-in voting is part of a disturbing pattern by the Trump administration to take power away from voters and concentrate it in the hands of those already running the country. It is clear to us that President Trump wants to keep Americans from voting in order to control the outcome of the election.

The 14th Amendment promises that voters in our country have equal protection and equal voice in the decisions that shape our lives. That promise means elections should be decided by voters, not by billionaires and politicians changing the rules, creating new barriers, and deciding which communities get to have a voice.

Protecting our vote means making sure every eligible voter can cast a ballot and every vote is counted. Popular Democracy will continue to defend our right to vote and mobilize our communities to turn out in record numbers.
