NEW YORK - The Center for Popular Democracy issued a condemnation of Trump's disgraceful pardon of Sheriff Joe Arpaio tonight, standing in solidarity with its state partners in Arizona and with immigrants and communities of color abused by law enforcement around the country:
"Joe Arpaio was a criminal and a sadist, who left office in disgrace after inflicting a reign of terror on communities across Arizona. In pardoning Arpaio, Trump has given the green light to all other racist sheriffs to follow his example.
This kind of impunity is unacceptable and cannot be allowed to stand. From Charlottesville to Arpaio, Trump has shown he has no qualms about advancing an agenda of white supremacy and enabling the most extreme and violent elements of our society.
Against this unprecedented threat, our communities will only become more united and more unyielding. We will hold every law enforcement officer to even higher standards of fairness and decency, and we will demand no less than full accountability for any and all officers who abuse their power.
The pardon of Joe Arpaio is not the beginning of a new era of white supremacy. It is the beginning of its end."
