Center for Popular Democracy Calls For Protest of Walt Disney Over Trump Ties
Disney condemned for role on Trump advisory council; Uber founder stepped down after protests
02.03.2017
NATIONWIDE - The Center for Popular Democracy, a national racial and social justice organization, is calling for protests against Disney in response to its ties to the Trump administration. Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger is a member of Trump’s Business Advisory Council. Mounting pressure from social media and nationwide protests against Uber led to the resignation of Uber CEO Travis Kalanick’s position on the council yesterday.
The announcement comes after drivers, CPD affiliates, and other community organizations organized #UberRidesWithHate protests at Uber offices around the country, demanding that the ride-sharing company stop collaborating with the Trump administration. The protests erupted in Palo Alto, CA, Oakland, CA, San Francisco, CA, San Diego, CA, New Orleans, LA, Seattle, WA and Hoboken, NJ.
In light of these successful Uber protests, CPD is calling for a continuation of resistance efforts in response to Trump’s divisive and discriminatory policies.
Racial and social justice activists say this is only the first step in what will be a continuous fight to protect the health and well-being of all people— including immigrants, people of color, minimum wage workers, and the LGBTQ community during the Trump administration. “This is a crucial moment but the fight is not over. We have shown a major corporation that will not have our support if they collaborate with and enable an administration that has called for the most anti-immigrant and un-democratic policies we have ever seen in this country” said Jennifer Epps-Addison, CPD’s Network President and Co-Executive Director.
