America Needs Functioning Judicial System
Center for Popular Democracy calls for timely nomination of new Justice
02.19.2016
President Obama has announced his intentions to fulfill his constitutional responsibility to nominate a replacement to the Supreme Court to fill Justice Scalia’s seat. Obama also called on the Senate to fulfill its responsibility to give that person a fair hearing and a timely vote.
Ana Maria Archila, Co-Executive Director of Center for Popular Democracy, released the following statement:
“It’s crucial that a new justice is appointed as soon as possible to ensure a functioning judicial system, one of the three branches of government on which our democracy was founded. Once President Obama nominates Justice Scalia’s successor, the Senate is bound by the Constitution to hold a hearing and confirmation vote on the candidate.
“An undue delay hurts millions of women, communities of color, low-wages workers, and immigrant families waiting for a full Supreme Court to weigh in on important decisions. If the Senate tries to obstruct justice, we will hold Senators accountable for their actions. Moreover, presidential candidates who try to politicize the democratic process will be remembered for their role in stalling justice.”
