Advocates and Families Deliver Strong Message in Support of President’s Immigration Action
4.18.2016
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral argument on President Obama’s deferred action initiatives, DAPA and extended DACA. The justices heard arguments defending DAPA’s legal standing while outside Center for Popular Democracy joined thousands of immigrant families and advocates to show their support for the president’s immigration executive action in a rally. Protesters travelled from Center for Popular Democracy partner groups in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
The Supreme Court will be making a decision on the future of the immigration initiatives by June 30. Texas and the plaintiff states in the lawsuit against the deferred action programs have more than 2.6 million U.S. citizens living with a DAPA-eligible family member.
Olga Armas from Elizabeth, New Jersey, member of Make the Road New Jersey, released the following statement:
"I'm travelling to Washington, DC on April 18th to support the President's Executive Action because it is key to my family's future. My husband and I are the parents of three beautiful daughters. For more than thirteen years, our family has lived together in the United States, but every day we live in fear of being separated from our daughters. DAPA is one step towards economic security and peace of mind."
Ana Maria Archila, co-executive director of Center for Popular Democracy, released the following statement: “As an organization working with immigrant communities, thousands of our members will be directly affected by the Supreme Court’s decision on DAPA. Today, across the country, millions of American families are standing up in support for the president’s immigration action. The Supreme Court has a real chance to promote justice and overcome the politics of hate.”
