Alaska Grassroots Alliance / StandUp Alaska
Alaskans Take A Stand is a diverse group of Alaskans coming together to increase community awareness on social and healing justice, Indigenous rights, and racial equity. Connecting through activities that address base community wellbeing measures across our beautiful state. Stand UP Alaska is a grassroots organization that engages at each level of government to increase public awareness of issues that affect our community. As one of the few BIPOC Women-Led social justice organizations in the Greatland, we are reimagining what our world can be.
Alaskans Take a Stand (c3) and our sister organization, Stand Up Alaska (c4) have and continue to fight for Alaskans on every level of government. We engage locally, at the state level and we also recognize and embrace our outsized importance on federal advocacy. In fact, we grew out of our efforts to save the Affordable Care Act. Since then, we were able to launch a successful campaign to get our prior governor to write a letter opposing the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Our non-profits were successful in both of these efforts of gaining the support of Senator Murkowski. We flew 100 grassroots leaders to Washington, DC and engaged in a civil disobedience in front Senator Sullivan’s office and had many meetings with Senator Murkowski in district and in DC. We organized women and Tribal leaders to lead these actions. We led a series of actions targeting Senator Murkowski on DC Statehood and various COVID packages.,
In 2021, we started the year with the #RealReliefRealPeople campaign. Currently, Stand Up Alaska and Alaskans Take A Stand are focusing on base building, winning support for the For the People Act, American Jobs Plan, Filibuster reform, S1 from Senator Murkowski. Additionally, we will engage in an effort ensure win a Senate seat for a progressive Alaskan in 2022. ATAS and S'UP AK continue to engage in federal campaigns around Voting Rights, Medicare for All, the CARE Act, winning more support for public health jobs in the American Jobs plan.
Our organizations, led by 2 women of color, divide our time equally between federal, state and local issues. We realize that all of the issues that negatively impact our communities are intersectional and complex, thus education is key to increased levels of advocacy. However, we realize that as we do the needed education and advocacy, we must hold all of our elected officials accountable.
