MTG calls for impeachment of FBI Director too
On May 16, the House Homeland Security Oversight Committee met to debate various , and one of the most vocal contributors was Georgia's most controversial and outspoken Republicans - Marjorie Taylor-Greene.
During the session, MTG took the opportunity to highlight what she sees as a clear and present danger to the sanctity of Congress. She flagged that while the committee debated its agenda, a "left-wing extremist" group - the Center for Popular Democracy - had raided congressional offices.
The session culminated in the Georgia Republican announcing that she would be filing articles of impeachment against U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves and FBI Director Christopher Wray. She later shared on Twitter that the phones in her office had apparently been "ringing off the hook" to share their support.
Impeachment appropriate for prosecuting J6 participants?
Commenting on her rationale for impeaching the U.S. Attorney Graves, MTG gave insights into why she believes his impeachment would be appropriate:
"You have already abused your position by maliciously prosecuting at least 1000 people for January 6, but you recently announced that you are going to arrest 1000 more."
The Georgia Republican has been an active champion of those who participated in protests at the Capitol Building on January 6, and in March, visited a federal facility where detainees were being held. On that occasion MTG was frustrated by a protestor who disrupted her speech outside the facility by repeatedly blowing a whistle.
While MTG clearly feels aggrieved about the plight of those who have been jailed for taking part in the J6 insurrection, it seems questionable for her to take issue with the U.S. Attorney to be using their position to prosecute them.
Is impeachment the answer
Georgia's Marjorie Taylor-Greene has frequently demonstrated a belief that the best way of tackling individuals or federal offices that she disagrees with, is to campaign to defund them or to impeach them. She has repeatedly called for the defunding of organisations including the IRS and the ATF.
She has even tackled President Biden himself, threatening to impeach him on multiple occasions.
But in other instances, the Georgia Republican has demonstrated a different viewpoint, and one of the most recent episodes related to her ongoing feud with New York Democrat - Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez - she criticized AOC for calling for the impeachment of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
The regular calls by MTG for the defunding of offices and impeachment of individuals seems to be largely ineffective for enacting political change.
What it has exposed is that the power to threaten impeachment of individuals for doing their job - just because it conflicts with a partisan-political agenda is a tactic that MTG is happy to employ as a means of gaining attention. The voters of Georgia may feel that this isn't the reason why they voted MTG into a second term in office.
