Job Description: Vermont Organizing Director

Rights & Democracy’s Vermont Organizing Director is a senior staff position, reporting to the Executive Director. This position is based in Vermont and is responsible for working with the Executive Director, Director of Programming and Policy, Communications Director, Director of Strategic Development, Issue/Program leads, Vermont’s organizing team, and RAD’s member leaders to carry out our field efforts on issue campaigns and build the organization in Vermont.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work with Executive Director and Vermont’s organizing team to develop comprehensive organizing program for developing dues-paying membership with a leadership ladder, based on vision set for by the RAD Board.

  • Train and supervise Vermont’s organizing staff, including Regional Organizers and Organizing Fellows.

  • Develop and execute statewide member recruitment and leadership development plans, working with issue/program leads when needed to develop plans for building issue teams.

  • Work with Director of Programming and Policy, Communications Director, issue/program leads, and campaign teams to develop escalating grassroots campaigns to win issue fights, with building RAD’s dues-paying membership and volunteer base as the priority for those campaigns.

  • Interim responsibilities include: bottomlining statewide workers’ rights issue campaign organizing deliverables in regions where RAD does not have Regional Organizers/Organizing Fellows; working with NH Organizing Director to develop a staff and member skill-based and political education program; and working with NH Organizing Director to develop a systematic tracking system to aid reporting of grant organizing deliverables and membership goals.

  • Coordinate with other staff to establish strong strategic and solidarity partnerships with other basebuilding organizations--labor and community-based organizations--and allies for movement building.

  • Working with our communications team and issue/program leads, develop strong membership communications to engage in issue fights, advance our mission and build a democratic base.   

  • Meet daily reporting and data entry deadlines, as well as hold Vermont’s organizing team accountable to their own reporting deadlines.

  • Management of systematic tracking system to aid reporting toward grant deliverables and membership goals.

  • Work with state-based staff members and RAD leaders to organize VT’s statewide Leadership Committee.

  • Participate in annual fundraising drives, supported by the Director of Strategic Development.

  • Attend meetings and professional development convenings with peers in our national networks.

Experience and capacities needed:

  • At least 5 years of campaign management experience in support of an issue, initiative, candidate, or coordinated electoral campaign.

  • Ideal candidate will have experience in community, labor, and electoral organizing.

  • Experience running field efforts on multiple issue campaigns simultaneously while effectively managing staff capacity.

  • At least 1 year of experience supervising multiple staff, preferably in the context of campaign management or community organizing program management; experience should include supporting staff in developing work plans, tracking progress toward goals, and reviewing performance on an annual basis.

  • Basic understanding of the legislative process and electoral cycles is preferred; the ideal candidate will have this same knowledge for Vermont.

  • Goal-orientation and willingness to hold self and our organizing team accountable to workplan goals.

  • Considerable experience in staff and volunteer skill-based training; additional experience as a popular or political educator is preferred.

  • Well-developed project management skills.

  • Excellent personal, verbal, and written communication skills. Fluency in Spanish and/or French is a plus.

  • Experience in and commitment to collaborative leadership, i.e., supporting member-led teams in collaborative decision making processes.

  • Ability to manage organizational statewide or national priorities while developing locally-based teams.

  • Ability to work quickly and cooperatively under pressure and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to work well with coalitions and the staff and leadership of allied organizations.

  • Energetic outlook and commitment to the mission and grassroots approach to change.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Willingness to work long hours, including nights and weekends, on a regular basis.

  • A team orientation that combines collegiality and creativity to drive and motivate others.

  • Experience using NGP VAN/VoteBuilder.

  • Experience using EveryAction or similar CRM.

  • Google Suite and Microsoft Excel proficiency.

Regular access to a car and ability to travel throughout the state is required for this position. Mileage is reimbursed.

Salary range is $45,000 - $65,000, depending on experience. RAD offers a strong benefits package.
