Liberal organizations' SCOTUS messaging document includes plan of action for confirmation battle

.

A coalition of nonprofit liberal organizations sent out a Supreme Court messaging action plan to their political allies in response to President Trump’s Supreme Court nomination.

The document, titled “SCOTUS Rapid Response Action Guide,” was created prior to the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett by a coalition of groups including: MoveOn, Frontline/ M4BL Electoral Justice Project, Demand Justice, NARAL Pro-Choice America, CPD Action, Indivisible, and Sunrise Movement.

The guide provides messaging and slogans for “action art” as well as suggestions for social media content.

These slogans include: “No Confirmation Before Inauguration, Let the people decide, Our future, our justice, I don’t want your nominee, I want_______ [fill in the blank to personalize].”

Other slogans that are advised for signs bring in current issues the Democratic base is talking about like: “Justice for Breonna Taylor, Racial Justice, Economic Relief, A Green New Deal, Medicare for All, COVID Testing, COVID Relief, Reproductive Freedom.”

The organizations urge similar language on social media, along with phrases such as, “We’re less than 30 days out from the election. Honor democracy and RBG. Let the people decide who will be the nominee.”

Suggesting to use the primary hashtag, #LetThePeopleDecide, on all their social media statements, the organizations advise further online statements including:

“Our most fundamental freedoms are at stake. Another conservative justice threatens access to reproductive freedom, healthcare, and equality. The people should pick the next president, and the next president should choose the nominee.”

“#RuthBaderGinsburg leaves a legacy on the Supreme Court that is etched into the fabric of our democracy. We must fight to protect it by ensuring that there’s no confirmation before the inauguration.”

“Senate leadership should be focused on addressing the COVID-19 crisis, not fast-tracking a Supreme Court nominee. No confirmation until inauguration — period. #LetThePeopleDecide”

Speakers are told to “lead with values” but not with data. “You can include it, but numbers shouldn’t be the lead.” Additionally, speakers should “name the violation of those values and/or culprit” and focus on an irresistible vision of the future.”

Activists are encouraged to plan events at their local courthouses as a way to bring their narrative into the public. The document provides ways for groups to register their events and assemble teams who organize the events. The information provides content on who is necessary for such rallies, like an action coordinator, a police liaison, and a safety coordinator as well as speakers.

The Landmark Legal Foundation’s Pete Hutchison responded to the document’s messaging, telling the Washington Examiner in a statement, “This appointment spells the end of the Supreme Court as a super legislature. Judge Barrett’s nomination represents a watershed moment for the Constitution and the country.” He added, “She is eminently qualified, and possessed of impeccable character, but no telling what dirty tricks the radical leftists on the judiciary committee have up their sleeves.”
