Campaign Manager - Workers Defense Project

Workers Defense Project (WDP) is seeking a full-time Campaign Manager in Houston, TX.

The Houston Campaign Manager will coordinate worker-led campaigns in city and state legislative advocacy and  voter engagement activities for WDP as well as perform certain activities for Workers Defense Action Fund, WDP’s affiliated 501c4 organization. The Campaign Manager is responsible for managing the voter engagement strategy and engaging low-wage workers in organizing efforts to win better working conditions for construction workers.  WDP’s policy priorities are to strengthen wage and safety protections for Texas workers, to promote local economic policies that are inclusive of WDP’s constituency, to protect the ability of WDP’s members to organize and advocate on the local, state, and national level, and to expand the labor and civil rights of low-wage workers and immigrant communities. The campaign manager works to carry out the these activities by engaging WDP members in local campaigns that win concrete improvements in their communities and their lives.

The campaign manager must be committed to WDP’s identity as a grassroots, membership-based organization, and will be required to collaborate actively with WDP staff and worker leaders to develop and execute campaign strategies that advance our mission and values. The campaign manager will supervise a team of organizers and support them to develop the leadership of worker members to execute strategic campaigns to build power for Texas workers. The campaign manager will develop strategic partnerships with our allies and with local policy-makers and build the capacity of members to become leaders in these efforts. This is a full time, salaried, and FLSA-exempt position.

Created in 2002, WDP is a statewide, membership-based organization devoted to workers’ rights and advocacy, chiefly aiming to build power among Texas construction workers. Its mission – to empower low-income workers to achieve fair employment through education, direct services, organizing and strategic partnerships – is accomplished through a network of dedicated staff, volunteers and members. WDP has won numerous awards for its cutting-edge achievements within one of the country’s most difficult climates for workers. The New York Times described WDP as “one of the most creative organizations for immigrant workers in the country”.


  • Develop and implement WDP’s advocacy agenda in coordination with WDP’s leadership and other key stakeholders at the local level;

  • Engage members in local policy and non-partisan electoral campaigns to advance WDP’s policy agenda, including wage and safety protections, economic development, and immigration policy;

  • Track local news and trends that relate to WDP’s policy goals and impact WDP’s membership;

  • Develop relationships and build coalitions with key local allies, including faith, labor, and community allies.

  • Coordinate staff and volunteers to conduct outreach and trainings in the community.

  • Cultivate and strengthen relationships with elected officials, community partners, and organizational allies; oversee the management and engagement of those relationships in order to further WDP’s mission and contribute to the overall success of WDP’s advocacy;

  • Supervise a team of campaign organizers to develop and execute member-driven campaigns to win better working conditions for Texas construction workers.

  • Develop campaign plans related to Re-building Houston in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.

  • Represent WDP in meetings with coalition partners and community, faith, and labor allies.

  • Collaborate with other WDP programs in Houston to support their efforts and activities.

  • Conduct non-partisan voter engagement and education work in coordination with Workers Defense Action Fund.

  • Develop trainings to develop member leadership and engage members in legislative and get out the vote campaigns.

  • Coordinate with WDP’s organizing staff and worker leaders to ensure that WDP’s policy work strategically and effectively involves WDP’s members and contributes to their development as leaders within the organization; this includes participating in the planning of public actions that complement WDP’s policy advocacy;

  • Conduct trainings and presentations related to WDP’s advocacy to WDP’s members and staff, and, as needed, on behalf of WDP at conferences, events, and legislative meetings and briefings;

  • Speak on behalf of WDP to both English and Spanish media.

  • Travel required as needed;

  • Any other activities that are necessary to carry out the work of WDP.


  • Two years of on-the-job experience in community organizing, social service, electoral, policy advocacy or related work.

  • Commitment to social justice, furthering workers rights, and building a broader labor movement.

  • Commitment to developing grassroots leadership to advance WDP’s vision to achieve just and dignified working conditions for low-wage workers.

  • Previous experience as a supervisor or managing a team to achieve a goal.

  • Fluency in English and Spanish (strong written and verbal communication skills in both languages).

  • Excellent critical thinking skills.

  • Talent to get people together and inspire others to take action.

  • Detail oriented and organized.

  • Ability to work independently and juggle multiple responsibilities.

  • Excellent time management and administrative skills.

  • Strong writing skills and ability to communicate with a diverse audience.

  • Ability to work irregular hours, including nights and weekends when necessary to be available to WDP members.

  • Ability to work well with diverse groups of people (including faith, labor, Latino immigrants, and African American community, among others).

  • Experience with Voter Activation Network (VAN) not required, but is a plus.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, internet.

  • Must own a vehicle.

Compensation depends on experience and is highly competitive.
