Center for Popular Democracy Action Backs Rep. Ellison as Democratic Party Chair

Co-executive directors say party needs bold leadership for new progressive era

11.14.2016

The co-executive directors of Center for Popular Democracy Action, Ana Maria Archila, Brian Kettenring, and Andrew Friedman, released the following statement in response to news that U.S. Representative Keith Ellison is being considered for the role of Democratic National Committee Chair:

"We need bold, new leadership at the DNC. In the trying times to come, the DNC must move aggressively to block Trump and his Administration’s racist and xenophobic agenda. Our communities cannot afford to suffer through conciliatory and passive leadership from the Democratic Party in the face of a surging tide of hateful speech and actions.

Moreover, the Party needs a powerful vision of equity, inclusion and grassroots power-building, to plot a pathway back to power. A President Trump will not deliver on promises to working class America, but a forward-looking, populist and progressive DNC can. We need to clean house and we believe that Rep. Keith Ellison is the ideal candidate to chair the DNC and to shepherd us into a new era of Progressive organizing for that body.”
