VICTORY! Participation and Inclusion for All in Newark, NJ
On May 20, 2016, the Newark City Council voted unanimously to create a municipal ID card program for all city residents. Thanks to advocacy by the Center for Popular Democracy (CPD) and our allies at the New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice (NJAIJ) the ordinance is one of the strongest municipal ID bills in the country, with strong privacy protections and fl exible eligibility requirements. The Newark ID will be particularly useful for immigrants, the homeless, formerly incarcerated people, and transgender individuals. All city agencies will accept the Newark ID as proof of identity and residency, easing access to city services and improving relationships between city offi cials and the community. Newark is the fi rst municipality in New Jersey to offer government-issued ID to all residents aged 14 and over, and stands to serve as a model for several other municipalities in New Jersey that are currently considering launching their own local ID card programs. The Newark ID has the full support of Mayor Ras Baraka, and the city expects to start issuing its fi rst cards at the beginning of August.

En mayo 20, el Concejo Municipal de Newark votó unánimemente para crear un programa de tarjeta de identifi cación municipal para todos los residentes de la ciudad. Gracias al apoyo del Centro para la Democracia Popular (CPD, por sus siglas en inglés) y nuestros aliados de la Alianza Nueva Jersey para la Justicia de los Inmigrantes (NJAIJ, por sus siglas en inglés) el decreto es uno de los proyectos de la ley de identifi cación municipal más fuertes en el país, con fuertes protecciones de privacidad y fl exibles requisitos de elegibilidad. El Newark ID será muy útil para los inmigrantes, las personas sin hogar, personas que estuvieron en encarceladas y personas transgénero. Todas las agencias de la ciudad van a aceptar el Newark ID como prueba de identidad y residencia, facilitando el acceso a los servicios de la ciudad y la mejora de las relaciones entre los funcionarios de la ciudad y la comunidad. Newark es el primer municipio en Nueva Jersey en ofrecer identifi cación emitida por el gobierno para todos los residentes mayores 14 años, y sirve de modelo para otros municipios de Nueva Jersey que actualmente están considerando la posibilidad de lanzar sus propios programas de tarjetas de identifi cación locales.
