Campaign Director, Voting Rights & Democracy Program

Position Location: Washington, DC, but strong candidates based in New York City would be considered

The Center for Popular Democracy is seeking a Campaign Director program to help develop, run, and win local and statewide voting rights campaigns on a range of issues, including same day registration, restoration of rights, universal voter registration, non-citizen voting, and other innovative voting rights reforms. The Director will work closely with CPD’s base-building partners across the across the country, as well as other allied state and national organizations to build and implement strategic campaigns.

About the Position

The ideal candidate will be an experienced and energetic professional who can lead CPD’s Voting Rights Team and effectively run our national Voting Rights & Democracy program. Candidates should have at least 5-7 years experience working with community-based organizations or labor unions on voting rights, election administration, restoration of rights or other democracy issues. We are looking for candidates with specific experience in developing and running ambitious state and local advocacy campaigns. Strong candidates will have significant experience working closely with base-building community organizations in coalition or directly to run local or state level issue campaigns. While the candidate need not be a policy expert in voting rights and election administration they should have a strong grasp of the voting rights landscape and major policy opportunities and challenges facing the field. CPD’s Voting Rights & Democracy program is moving innovative and ambitious voting rights strategies, so we are looking for candidates that are able to translate visionary ideas into actionable and winnable campaigns.

Job Responsibilities

The Campaign Director, Voting Rights & Democracy Program will report directly to the Director of Civic Engagement & Politics.

The Campaign Director will:

  • Oversee the development, implementation and success of CPD’s Voting Rights & Democracy program
  • Provide strategic and visionary direction for the Voting Rights & Democracy Program
  • Coordinate CPD’s support to state and local organizations working on a range of voting rights campaigns, including same day registration, restoration of rights, universal voter registration, and local voting rights reforms.
  • Support CPD partners on campaign strategy, development of field programs, campaign tactics and other activities to meet campaign goals and priorities within the Voting Rights & Democracy program.
  • Support fundraising to grow CPD’s work on these issues, and to raise resources for our partners’ driving campaigns in the field.
  • Support partners to develop the expertise and leadership of their members on voting rights and democracy issues, in particular support leadership development of those historically marginalized within our democratic process.
  • Participate and represent CPD in national-level policy and campaign conversations voting rights and democracy work and continue to build CPD’s role within the national voting rights landscape.
  • Coordinate with the campaign and policy staff in other issue area, to find opportunities for aligned work and cross-campaign coordination.
  • Coordinate with our research staff to develop a research agenda, both to support existing campaigns and to support our broad national agenda on building a path towards universal voter registration.

Qualifications

We are seeking candidates with excellent relationship-building skills, who are outcome driven, with strong and diverse writing skills and project management skills. Ideal candidates should have demonstrated experience in the following:

  • A demonstrated commitment to social and racial justice issues and understanding of challenges facing immigrant communities, communities of color, and low-and moderate income families;
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of strategic campaign and organizing experience on voting rights and democracy issues;
  • Experience developing and managing large scale or statewide issue campaigns;
  • Independent and strong leader that is able to drive project and programs to completion in fast-paced environment;
  • Ability to work within a coalition of diverse organizations and partners;
  • Experience working in diverse communities and with grassroots organizations;
  • Excellent writing and communication skills;
  • Results-focused and organized;
  • Self-motivated – proven ability to work independently;
